While
specializing in the rehabilitation and re-engining of locomotives for
the Sri Lanka Railway (SLR), our Corporate Engineering Services Division
(CESD) also provides Project Management Services for the different business
units of United Tractor & Equipment Ltd. (UTE). |

Projects
successfully completed so far by the CESD are: |

01.
Rehabilitation of 10 units W1 class Diesel Hydraulic locomotives,
reclassified as W3 class by the SLR. |
|

| |
Ten
W1 Class locomotives were rehabilitated by replacement of their
power packs with Caterpillar 3512 DITA engines and Voith L 520 rzU2/KB
360 transmissions. A new electronic locomotive control system “Siemens
Krauss Maffei KM Direkt Train Control System” was installed
on these locomotives. The rehabilitated locomotive had an overall
power increase of 13% with Dynamic Braking capability added to the
transmission system. A Gardner Denver expressor and a completely
new cooler group from Behr was installed. The cooling fan and expressor
drives were converted to hydrostatic driving systems. All 10 units
have completed their warranty period and are now deployed in service
on the up country lines.
The total cost of the project was approximately Rs. 870 million.

02.
Re-engining
of four units M5 class diesel electric locomotives by installing Caterpillar
3516 DITA engine developing 1340 kW at 1500
rpm. Scope of work included provision of necessary couplings & Bell
Housings, and coupling existing main alternator
to 3516 engine with necessary designs for engine mounting sub frame and
provision of necessary shafts and couplings
to couple to existing cooler unit. And auxiliaries. |

03.
Effluent Treatment Plant for Unilever Ceylon Ltd. |
|

| |
An
effluent treatment plant was supplied, installed and commissioned
at the Unilever factory in Grandpas on a turnkey basis. The contract
included operation of the plant for one year after commissioning. |
